Variable Input and Output Units of Measure
Junction F/B provides the capability to maintain multiple units of measure in your recipes. This takes advantage of unit of measure conversions that can be generic across the entire system or unique to a specific item. Instead of having to maintain conversion relationships between each and every possible unit of measure we have employed a “smart” logic that performs several iterations that will “seek out” the conversion by utilizing more than one particular UOM conversion record. Junction F/B also employs other techniques to measure product quantities, such as catch weight and potency.

Catch Weight

By using catch weights, materials being received in individual containers of various weights can be properly processed.

Junction F/B allows companies that process or produce items, such as fresh meat, to use actual weight throughout their supply chain. Since the actual weight of each instance of an item varies (each chicken has a different weight), the actual variable weight must be captured and tracked for each instance of an item. This actual variable weight is known as the “Catch Weight” of the item. Junction F/B supports catch weight throughout the supply chain including:

  • Accounts payable, purchasing, receiving
  • Warehousing and distribution
  • Production
  • Accounts receivable, sales, order processing, invoicing and returns

For catch weight items, the actual variable weight determines the financial value of the purchase, production, or sale of the item. Commissions, inventory, scrap, etc., are all valued and calculated using catch weight.

In order to reduce transaction requirements, Junction F/B supports both full and limited visibility catch weight models. It is possible to receive and pay for an item by catch weight, warehouse it by standard weight, and sell or consume it at catch weight. If an item is tracked by catch weight and standard weight, Junction F/B provides the costing and financial reporting necessary to accommodate the conversion between the weights.

Junction F/B allows for setting up catch weight tolerances for triggering a warning or error if the entered catch weight falls outside the allowed catch weight range. The range is specified as a percentage of the standard catch weight of the item master while each functional area can have their own catch weight tolerance. The tolerance can be setup for all items, a group of items, or individualized for each item.

Potency

Potency characteristics allow materials to be processed and maintained with respect to those concentrations.

Potency is used to describe materials that have an active component that is a percentage of the overall weight or volume of the material. It is commonly used to address the concentration of a material in a solution or blend, the “dry weight” of a mixture or slurry, or the relative active nature of a product. Junction F/B can store the average potency by item and inventory dimension combination and is updated as inventory is received. For example, a storage tank that is utilized to hold 45% Caustic Potash may actually be 46.7% potency. When the tank level lowers to the point that another shipment can be delivered and transferred into the tank, the combination of the received potency is averaged with the remaining contents or “heel” in the tank to arrive at an average potency by weight.

Input potent items on a recipe are scaled based on the average potency to meet a target potent quantity. This may cause non-potent input items to also scale in the recipe.

In Junction F/B, items may be priced by potent unit for either purchase orders or sales orders or may use standard pricing. Pricing by potency recalculates the price to be the price per potent unit based on the item’s standard potency and uses the item’s potency quantity instead of the purchase or sales quantity.
